Ekiti State University awards best graduating student N100 cash gift, Media users react (photo)

Many Nigerians have been crying out over the trend of reality stars being given millions of naira gift by organisers of the shows in conjunction with corporate organisation while students with academic excellence gets ridiculous amount of money for their brilliancy.

A similar scenario been played out again when the best graduating student of department of civil engineering from Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, is awarded a cash gift of N100 only. For emphasis and clarification, the cash gift amount was also spelt out in words, one hundred naira only.

The absurd amount was awarded to Bamisaye Tosin Tope and the letter informing the awardee of the ‘precious’ cash prize is from the office of the registrar of EKSU.

Many Nigerians could not hide their anger at such a paltry sum of cash gift for brilliancy.

That’s the idea! Do not attach so much monetary value to it, given money will never be enough. One thing is priceless, you pushed yourself hard and earned this certificate which means no one can take the value away from you. It’s why we Ekiti people are very well read

To collect the N100 will cost more than N100 but the award is valid. So I say take the award, don’t collect the money.

Most of these awards were instituted by Individuals, Trusts, Charity Organisations etc, very many years ago, when N100 was a very substantial amount of cash, when the Naira was probably equal to the $ or £.

While those who initiated the awards might have stopped remitting the award sum, the awards still remain in recognition of the students performance. In other words, the purpose is no longer the cash, but the recognition of Student’s performance.
