TWISTED PATH (Episode 11)
By Oluwafunminiyi Komolafe
It took Fatima a while to think about Mr. Clement’s proposal but in the end, she realized she had no choice. First, she wasn’t sure they would let her go just like that if she should reject the offer and even if they did, she had nothing to go back to. Within three days after she had accepted, she went through rigorous physical and mental training. The major challenge she had was at shooting but after a while, she got used to the loud report of the bullet.
After her training, Fatima was taken to a small house in town.
Not only had every single piece of her belongings been packed and arranged there, but the place was also set up like a mini-clinic and she also noticed Mohammed’s clothes together with blood-soaked bandages and cutting wool lying around. Mr. Clement took a seat and nudge her to do the same.
“A thousand questions must be bulging through your mind right now.” He said.
“You will be living here until your mission is completed.” He spoke further.
“May I know what the mission is?” She asked.
Mr. Clement smiled.
“We are sending Mohammed back into his terrorist group as our spy and we want you to be his handler.” He explained.
“Why would you send him back? How am I supposed to be his handler?” She complained.
“Just see this as a TV show, You are to act like his benefactor, the one who has been taking care of him all these while and when he gets back in, he is going to report directly to you after which you forward his report to the agency.” He said.
“But what if he remembers everything and decided to bite us in the back, he could kill me?” She asked.
“We have a contingency plan for that. You have to find every possible means to make sure you two are emotionally involved. It’s very crucial to the mission.”
“But how am I supposed to do that.” Fatima inquired.
“You are a woman, I don’t suppose you are needed to be taught that.” Mr. Clement replied.
“If this mission becomes successful, the agency will set you up with everything you need.” He promised.

On the ride back to the agency, Dr. Akpan spent a few minutes of persuasion before Mohammed finally agreed to go on the covert mission. Once the reached the agency, Mohammed was made to sit down while he was being briefed on his mission.
“We are happy that you have decided to embark on this mission for us. We have everything you will ever need ready. This file contains everything we have on the terrorist group.” Mr. Waziri said.
“How am I supposed to get in when I can’t remember anything. Where am I supposed to go?” Mohammed asked.
“Inside the file is a number the terrorist use. Just dial it and recite the words which have been written for you, they will come to pick you up.” Mr. Waziri answered.
“What if they don’t trust me? What if they knew I am a spy?” Mohammed said.
“You will have to try all your best to prove to them that you are still loyal. The file contains all you have to say to make them believe you.”
“You need to understand something, if you betray us, I will personally hunt you down and feed your body to the dog.” Abeeb threatened.

Mr. Clement was still giving Fatima orientation when a knock sounded on the door. One of the agents with him went to open the door and when he did, he found Dr. Akpan and Mohammed standing outside the door.
Dr. Akpan didn’t wait for an invitation before stepping in. Mohammed’s face lit with joy when he set eyes on Fatima, he never thought he would see her again.
Fatima, on the other hand, wasn’t that excited to see him. Having been told the kind of man he was, she wasn’t keen to continue an association with him. Realizing she had no choice, she managed to reciprocate the bright smile he flashed when they greeted.
Pain from where a tracker had been injected at the back of his neck shoot through Mohammed’s body.
“You two are to play doctor and patient for three days before Mohammed makes his move. The essence of this is to establish Mohammed’s story with the Tanrina, Believe me, they will cross check everything he says” Mr. Clement said.
“You guys need to make this as real as possible. Mohammed, you are to report everything to Fatima, she is your handler.” Dr. Akpan said.
“We will leave you two to it now, good luck.” Mr. Clement said before he, Dr. Akpan and their agents left Mohammed and Fatima alone in the house.
