TWISTED PATH

Abu Mohammed was tapping his foot against the steel floor of the bus impatiently. He and his cohorts had been waiting inside the blue bus stationed opposite Sheraton hotel where the ECOWAS meeting was taking place. Mohammed checked his wrist watch for the umpteenth time. Time wasn’t on their side and if they didn’t act fast, they might lose the operation they spent the past two months preparing for. A phone rang from one of his henchmen and the call was handed over to him.

“Salam alaikum, Mohammed.” The caller greeted.
“Jamal what is happening? We have been sitting here all day waiting for the messenger.” Mohammed complained.

“Am afraid there has been a problem. Our messenger has been arrested at the airport and is currently being interrogated.” Jamal explained.
“How did it happen?”
“Am not sure, all I know is that the security agents are definitely unto you now. You need to abort the mission and pull out now.” Jamal said.
“Abort the mission after all we have sacrificed?” Mohammed asked.

“It’s a direct order from the Shiek himself.”
Mohammed ended the call and slammed the phone hard against the door.
“This is unacceptable, how can we abort when we are so close to achieving our goal. No I won’t let that happen.” He picked up the explosive vest and don it on himself.
His two henchmen were surprised by what he was doing.
“You can’t do this Mohammed.” One of them said.
Mohammed continued, connecting the explosive vest to a hand detonator.
“This is insane Mohammed, the Shiek won’t like it.” The second one blurted.

“Do any of you have any better idea? So you expect us to forfeit all the preparation we have made and scramble back to our hole like rats?” Mohammed snapped and his men were petrified.
“This is a holy war we are fighting, my life is nothing compared to the victory we seek. Allah’s will must be done.” He opened the door, jumped out the car and started making his way towards the hotel.

Nothing hurts more than seeing someone else reap the benefit you worked hard for. Fatima had learnt all that is to know about being a resident doctor. In fact she could read most of the medical books off-hand and even locate any human organs with her eyes closed but still she failed the exam.

Quitters are never winner and winners are not quitters, so they said but it’s the fifth time and Fatima was starting to believe her luck would never change. All of her mates who they got admitted to the medical school together were already fulfilling their dream. How could anyone believe that her life was being made miserable simply because she refused to open her legs.

She knew she was only being exploited because she had no one to lean on. Being born in a humble background, primary school was difficult, secondary school was a struggle and University with medical school would have been impossible if not for the scholarship she was awarded. Having gone through thick and thin to make sure she fulfills her dream of becoming a surgeon, the devil has been using Dr Festus to pull her down whenever she was so close to reaching for her goal, If only she has a rich parent like most of her colleagues, she would have found a way around Dr Festus. Drops of tears rolled down as she remembered how her mother died of cancer nine years ago.

Fatima had forgotten that she was in a car heading home after completing her shift. She was totally oblivious of the traffic light telling her to stop. She nosed her car forward and it happened in a flash. By the time she realized what was happening, she had committed a crime no amount of fine could pay for.

It had been anticipated that the terrorist would make a move at the ECOWAS meeting taking place at the Sheraton hotel. So Abeeb wasn’t surprised when they received Intel about the man the terrorist had planned on using as their suicide bomber.

His picture was circulated through all the airport and bus station in the city and he was apprehended few days later at the airport. It had taken a rigorous and intense Interrogation to loosen the bomber’s tongue. It was he who told them Abu Mohammed, the right hand man to Shiek was in town coordinating the attack. Since then they had been planning on stopping the attack and capturing Abu Mohammed. Although Abeeb knew they had thwarted the terrorist’s plan by arresting there bomber but Tanrina weren’t known to give up that easily.

“Can’t this car go any faster?” Abeeb barked at one of his team members driving the SUV, on their way to corner the terrorist. He looked back at the two SUV following close behind and also checked his wrist watch.
“Three minutes to action, boys get your gears ready.” He commanded and everyone don their bullet proof vest and armed themselves with assault rifles..

Heading South

Minutes later, the flags bearing the symbol of ECOWAS countries was seen dancing in the air. They were only few seconds away from the the gate of Sheraton hotel when the team witnessed their second most wanted man Abu Mohammed exiting a bus, dressed in an ash color suit. As he walked gallantly towards the hotel gate. Abeeb aimed at him with a sniper’s rifle. Abeeb was about taking the shot when a careless driver suddenly knocked his target down and created a pandemonium.
