Making a living as a writer in Nigeria is not as hard as you think. In the same manner, it’s not as rosy as the pictures you see successful writers paint online. To make money as a writer require lots of hard work, strategies and of course, prayers.
Anytime I’m not serving my clients, prospecting or creating a new post I will share with you here, I’m always looking for faster and proven ways a writer in Nigeria can make more money without sacrificing their soul.
As I test and implement new these ideas, I share them with students of my freelance writing course.
If you desire to consistently increase your earnings as a writer in Nigeria, you need to know multiple means of generating income, online and offline.
This is because what worked yesterday may not work today and every day and as such, you shouldn’t be stuck in the dark – you need to know at least 7 ways to make money writing in Nigeria.
Would you be glad if I show you 7 proven ways a writer in Nigeria can make money without burning out?
If yes, then I plead with you to give me your attention for the next few minutes.
When you are set to start making money writing, here are 7 things you can do in Nigeria to earn money even if you just started your career today.
#1. Writing Reviews
Do you have a knack for excellence and precision? Can you read through the mind of an author, revealing words he never thought of? Are you an influencer whose words attract massive engagements either on a live stage, on social media or on your blog?
If yes, then I bet you’ve been trivializing with a million naira opportunity if a part of your income as a writer doesn’t come from writing reviews for authors, service providers, and product manufacturers.
Authors, service providers and product manufacturers are always on the lookout for people with high persuasive writing skills to help them in their online and offline promotions. Good a thing, many of them are willing to pay any amount as long as you can deliver.
People (consumers) want to have a summarized view of what a book is all about, what benefit they can derive when they pay for a service or buy a product. The stress of trying to figure it out themselves is what every good marketer tries their best to avoid – because they are too lazy for Africa that they won’t.
Hence, adding review writing as one of your tools for making money as a writer in Nigeria is not negotiable.
#2. Writing Sales Copies
Not all sales copies have the capacity to convert readers to rabid customers who queue up screaming, “Take my money…” Some are so lame that the highest engagement they could get is a like and when they are shared on a sales page, they end up boasting the blog’s bounce rate.
An understanding of this, is what makes internet marketers who are serious with their business to seek the help of a professional copywriter (that’s, a writer specialized in writing copies) instead of trying to save cost and at the end, they lose more money.
Of all the money making techniques I ever implemented as a writer, helping clients write their sales page is one of the fastest ways I double my income consistently. I had a case I earned 5 times what I was paid when I write an ordinary article.
In order to write an effective content that will make a reader pull out their wallet and handle their money over to you, your copy must speak expressly to their emotion till a point they can kick all objections just to have your product or service.
#3. Organizing paid online events
Not many writers know the fact that they are also thought leaders. As a thought leader who has invested so much to build their platform, you have the right to charge a fee from anyone who desires to scoop your best thought on any particular subject of monetary value.
No matter the level you are right now in your writing career, someone on your email or social media friends’ list hopes to be like you, desires to learn your strategies and are willing to pay whatever bill you may call. You may not know this until now – but it’s true – I speak from experience.
Organizing webinar on a secret Facebook group, WhatsApp group or with any apps like Zoom.us can be another great medium to make money as a writer.
Think of all the things of great value you can teach, organize them in a strategic format like this one and launch them online. At the moment, I have two online programs that have continued to fetch endless income for me as a writer since January, 2017.
Writers can also earn as coaches and consultants. I know of so many coaches in Nigeria who before their coaching career worked at different capacities as writers.
Some of them were authors, some copywriters and publishers. They kept at that until their content began to garner local and international recognitions prompting people to begin to rally round them to learn their strategies.
The amazing thing I want you to take away here is that these people are not more human than you. It could be you charging your students N100,000 to teach them what you know about running an effective digital marketing business, network marketing business or just how to set up a profitable home-based business.
The truth you need to appreciate is that if you can write, you can also be paid to coach someone how to write. I’m telling you this because I’m not the only Nigerian who does it; Emeka Nobis is a writer too but a part of his income also comes from his various coaching classes.
#5: Social media management
Not many people know as much as you know about social media. Some of them that know, don’t have all the time in the world to manage their social media pages themselves – they need the services of a creative mind with the ability to consistently create useful and fresh contents for their audience.
At this point, the first person to come to mind is a writer.
Organizations like Churches, Banks, schools, eateries, manufacturing firms etc and individuals like top business gurus, politicians and entertainment celebrities don’t have the luxury time to manage their social media accounts themselves – they depend on social media strategists to grow and manage their fan-base.
Are you still wondering how to make money as a writer?
Try pitching all the busy entrepreneurs and organizations you know to act as their social media manager. I have a lot of my friends in Lagos who earn big income every month simply by managing social media accounts. But just before you do that, please read this post to guide you on the mistake to avoid.
#6: Freelance writing
Freelance writing is not a new word. I doubt if there’s any writer in Nigeria who doesn’t know what it means to be a freelance writer.
However, in case you are new to writing, please know that a freelance writer is one who works on a self-employed basis. They are at liberty to work with as many clients as their schedule can handle.
As one who makes six digit figures income as a freelance writer, I can categorically tell you that this is the fastest and most consistent way to make money online as a writer. It doesn’t matter whether you live in Nigeria or not, you can write and get paid in different currencies if you learn what you need to know as a freelance writer.
After you’ve chosen your writing niche, take your pen and paper and list out all the blogs you wish to be featured in, their URLs and editors’ contacts and start pitching them. If you cold-pitch 200 prospects with a compelling and custom pitch, you will ultimately get at least 10 positive responses.
#7: Publish a book
Package your best thoughts into a book, eBook or audio book and sell them to very hungry audience out there.
One thing I can’t forget in a hurry which I have also shared on several blogs was how I made over N30,000 in a single meeting selling my audio book back in 2014 as a final year student.
While other students were struggling to survive on the meager pocket money their parents sent them, I was leading a successful life simply by selling my knowledge packaged in an audio format to a hungry audience.
The good thing about publishing a book is that you longer need to go through the route of traditional publishing when you can do it yourself at a cheaper rate.
Long before your book is published, you should start building relationship to make your marketing epic.
